Propane Safety

As a propane provider, Midwest Gas has a duty to warn of any potential dangers in a customer’s propane system which is why we require a Gas Check for all accounts. The Gas System and Appliance Check is an inspection program that provides our technicians with guidelines to thoroughly inspect propane systems to guarantee safety. This essential procedure will give you reassurance that your home and family are safe. A bonus is knowing that your propane system is operating efficiently, and you are not losing valuable gas to a leak.

If you use propane at your home or business, it is important to know the steps to take if you smell gas or suspect a gas leak:

  • NO FLAMES OR SPARKS!

Immediately put out all open flames or smoking materials. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or fire.

  • LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY!

Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.

  • SHUT OFF THE GAS AT THE TANK

Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).

  • REPORT THE LEAK

Once you are safely away from the gas leak, call Midwest Gas at 859-441-8112. Our 24-hour emergency service means that a Midwest Gas service technician is always available. If you are concerned about immediate danger, call 911 or your local fire department.

  • DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA

Do not return until your propane retailer, emergency responder, or qualified professional determines that it is safe to do so.

  • GET YOUR PROPANE SYSTEM CHECKED

Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, your propane retailer or a qualified professional must check your entire propane system to ensure that it is leak-free.
